Stephanie Herman brings years of knowledge, training, and experience into her Mindful Kinetics Program. She studied and performed dance -- ballet, jazz, modern, theatre -- under legendaries George Balanchine, Alvin Ailey, Martha Graham and others.
At the age of 19, Stephanie became Principal Ballerina with Le Grand Theatre de Geneve and Opernhaus Zurich working with George Balanchine as artistic director and Patricia Neary as director, was soon dancing with Rudolf Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov on some of the world's most prominent stages. Further training in New York City included the disciplines of Pilates, the Gyrotonic Expansion System®, yoga and more.
Stephanie's Mindful Kinetics Program was born from efforts to heal herself. As principal ballerina and prodigy of George Ballanchine's New York City Ballet, she placed tremendous demands on her body, and depended upon it not only for her livelihood but for the source of her life's passion -- dance. It was at the age of 21 that she experienced her first serious injury. In 1973, to address that injury, she was introduced to Carola Trier, the first disciple of Joseph Pilates. Working personally with Trier, she was able to heal her injury -- in fact, ending up even stronger than she was before.
Then, in 1986, she suffered another debilitating injury, to her back and knee, which lasted three years. Working directly with Julio Horvath, the creator of the Gyrotronic Expansion System®, Stephanie was able to heal the back injury, but was left with the continuing knee problem. After the failure of doctors and physical therapists to heal her, she drew upon her own training and educated herself about body mechanics and the kinesiology of rehabilitation. Using The Mindful Kinetics Program she designed, she surprised her doctors with a quick and complete recovery that again left her stronger than before. During that time, Stephanie delved deeply into the magic created when the science of fitness meets the soul of dance. Certified by the American College of Sports Medicine (ASCM) and a Certified Pilates Instructor, she is fully versed in the physiology of human musculature. These therapeutic elements are present in every workout Stephanie creates.
After founding and directing her DanceAerobics® studio in New York for many years, Stephanie founded and has operated Stephanie Herman's Muscle Ballet, LLC in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1993. She has been featured on talk shows and in national and international publications for her unique and effective dance fitness programs.
